"More than 800 passenger-train trips in North America! Slightly fewer in Europe and elsewhere overseas. From the Canadian to the Dominion, Super Continental, Ocean, Muskeg Mixed, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Silver Meteor and Durango & Silverton. From the Night Caledonian to Shakespeare Limited, Night Ferry, Rheingold, Orient Express, Sud-Expresso, Palatino and Indian-Pacific. A unique perspective from someone in the thick of the action, both personally or professionally, since the 1950's. Especially for the passenger-train rider, historian, modeller or interested observer, all free of charge." - Peter Dawes.

WELCOME!

...to my passenger-train travel logs and consists. I've organized the trips into two projects: NO MATTER WHERE IT'S GOING for North America (Canadian passenger trains accounting for 89% of trips and 85% of distance; American, Mexican and now Costa Rican, the rest); and LA GRANDE ALLURE for Overseas (European passenger trains during 12 holidays; Australian and Fijian during one).

I've just posted a revised version of No Matter Where It's Going: 1st 2010's, incorporating my trips during 2011 (which included VIA's Canadian and several Quebec-Ontario Corridor trains, Amtrak's Maple Leaf and Silver Meteor, and a Costa Rican tourist train) and a revised Reprise. Minor corrections and updates have also been made to all other No Matter Where It's Going volumes, but none to their La Grande Allure counterparts. Readers can access the two revised volumes under Latest above, or any volume by means of the horizontal toolbar located both above and at the bottom of these pages.

My intention is to continue posting further versions where necessary, including annual updates at the beginning of each new year in which there have been further travels.

Please note that these volumes are personal accounts of my passenger-train and associated road, marine and air trips, supplemented by lots of photos and other images. I hope they will appeal to those interested in the role of the passenger train in society, and the evolution of rail travel over this period. While trip purpose, references to travelling companions, and anecdotes are included, I've tried to present them in such a manner as to be easily avoidable by those looking strictly for train consists or composition.
